Family Fun Events: Come Rain or Come Shine

Springtime weather in Dallas is perfect for outdoor festivals and fairs.This weekend, One Arts Plaza is throwing its first annual block party.  The event is FREE and open to the public and will be held Sunday, April 18, 2010 between 11a.m. and 6 p.m. The afternoon will feature live cooking demonstrations from each of the One Arts Plaza restaurants and a variety of live musical performances throughout the day. The plaza will also feature a farmers market represented by Lilium Flowers, Spicer Green Market, 3JBeef, Brazos’ Valley Cheese, Homestead Gristmill, Village Baking Co., Aaron’s Coffees and others.

These are just a few of the highlights:

Screen Door will host Grill Work 101: Classic North Carolina Pulled Pork Barbecue. Watch as Chef David McMillan shows you how it’s done demonstrating how to make, pull and serve this classic Southern dish. He’ll be selling it by the half-pint, pint and sandwich. Screen Door’s Chef Joe will show you the southern style snack you’ve been missing out on, popcorn chicken livers and pepper jelly. Buy them by the handful. And, Jorge’s owner Don Jorge will sell fresh-off-the-grill brisket tacos, a Dallas Tex-Mex classic. Available for sale by the pound.

Jorge’s will serve two of its most popular chorizo and egg breakfast tacos prepared by Chefs Don Jorge and Guero.  Jorge’s most spicy cocktail, “El Jalisco Margarita” with cucumbers, jalapenos and, of course, tequila, will be shaken up and served by Tony. Fedora’s mixologist Trevor McMahan will show you how to make a Bellini and Screen Door’s star bartender Ryan Charles will demonstrate how to make the perfect Mint Julep.

Fedora’s Chef Javier Valle’s will host a Hand Tossed Pizza Demonstration and Screen Door’s Ryan Charles will create the “Carolina Nap” with dark rum, spiced rum, white rum & 151, pineapple, vanilla beans and brown sugar. Jorge’s bartender Tony will prepare Michellita’s. Jorge’s take on the famous Mexican spicy beer cocktail.

Stop by Dali Wine Bar and Restaurant for “A Taste of Dali” with sampling and wine tasting flights for purchase on Dali’s patio.

Tei An’s Owner and Chef, Teiichi Sakurai will cook his traditional, Unagi Kabayaki (grilled Unagi fresh water eel) all day.

April 17 & 18 is Magic Weekend at The Faire

DallasKidsRead! at NorthPark Center

Springtime weather in Dallas can also be unpredictable, so if it rains there is no reason to curtail your plans for family fun. There is a great event going on at NorthPark Center on Saturday, April 17, 2010. DallasKidsRead supported by AT&T, is designed to foster a love of literature and reading among our youngest citizens.  Laura Leppert serves as Honorary Chair for this event benefitting Rainbow Days, Inc. The event  is from  1:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

DallasKidsRead features more than 20 nationally acclaimed authors and illustrators will read their books, host illustration workshops and provide autographs at NorthPark Center. Your family will  enjoy celebrity storytelling, puppet shows, crafts, face painting and musical entertainment between Macy’s and Nordstrom.  Community guest readers will read their favorite childhood books, including a doctor, a TV personality, a pilot, among others. Storybook characters will greet and take pictures with their biggest fans! There will be puppet shows, crafts, face painting, musical entertainment and the DallasKidsRead! bookstore will be located in the Bookmarks Corridor. Books for sale include many authored and illustrated by our guest authors and illustrators! Purchase a book and get it signed by these award-winning artists. A portion of proceeds will be donated to Rainbow Days, Inc.
